Chiropractic Care First, Surgery Second for Sciatica

A new study comparing chiropractic spinal adjustments versus microdiskectomy in patients with sciatica (pain running down the leg) as a result of lower back disk herniation was published recently indicating the effectiveness of chiropractic care.

Patients included in this study had already failed to respond positively to at least 3 months of non-operative management including treatment with analgesics, lifestyle modification, physiotherapy, massage therapy, and/or acupuncture.

Patients were randomly assigned to either the chiropractic spinal adjustments group (the most common specialized procedure used by doctors of chiropractic) or the microdiskectomy group where patients received microdiskectomy surgery.

The results indicated that 60 percent of patients with sciatica (NOTE: they had already failed other medical management) benefited from spinal adjustment to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention.

Thus, it makes sense for those suffering from lower back (lumbar) disk herniation even with sciatica to strongly consider chiropractic care even if other forms of care have been unsuccessful – at least prior to going under the knife, so to speak.

Lower Blood Pressure with Chiropractic?

Here is a very intresting video regarding how chiropractic can help lower your blood pressure.

While I feel this is a good report overall, I would disagree with one key point: I feel that the vast majority of chiropractors (including myself) analayze and correct the alignment of the atlas bone (C1), not "only a small number of chiropractors" as the video says. There are numerous research studies currently being conducted to further investigate this. This has far-reaching consequences, as roughly half of all American adults have high blood pressure. I've had numerous patients who, after beginning their chiropractic adjustments, I have had to refer back to their MD for reduction of blood pressure medications.

Switzerland Vacation

Many of you have asked, so... here are some photos from my recent vacation to Switzerland. Also, I brought back some Swiss Chocolate from the Cailler Chocolate Factory for all of my practice members. Come in this week for a free treat. They won't last long!

This is the Lion Monument in Luzern. It looks so delicate, yet it is carved out of solid rock. It commemorates the Swiss soldiers who died while protecting the King of France in the French Revolution.

Here I am, in front of the Bern Bear Fountain and the old clock tower. Bern is a very charming historic town and also the capital of Switzerland.

This is the Château de Chillon castle, just outside of Lausanne. It dates back to the year 1150 and is very well preserved since it was never attacked in battle.

We were VERY lucky to get a flight out of Geneva before Switzerland closed it's airspace due to the volcano eruption in Iceland. Most of Europe is still "grounded" as of today.

I got a call from the baby's mother the next day. She said that after 4 days of poor sleep, baby Cory slept for nearly 12 hours straight, following his first chiropractic adjustment. There is an old saying that goes: "As the twig is bent, so grows the tree." I am whole heartedly convinced that our culture would be DRAMATICALLY different if we all had regular chiropractic checkups "from womb to tomb."
